東京の5月は遅咲きの桜の余韻が残り、ちょうど日本の「こどもの日」と「みどりの日」が重なる時期です。生命力あふれるこの月に、紅白の国旗と桜をかたどったメダルが、闘う人々の精神的な寓話を物語ります。国旗の日の丸は沈むことのない太陽を表し、また、すべての人の心にある永遠の信念でもあります。アスリートたちが競技場で追いかける桜のメダルのように、8枚の花びらが重なり合って咲き、一枚一枚の花びらには繭から抜け出し蝶になる瞬間が刻まれています。日本造幣局がデザインした桜メダルは、金メッキ技術を用いて柔らかさと硬さを兼ね備えており、朝日の中を走る人々の姿と似ています。一見壊れやすい蕾は霜や雪によって鍛えられ、やがてまばゆいばかりの金色の桜の花になります。このメダルの最も深い意味は、雌しべにある 7 つの光線に隠されています。これらは北斗七星に相当し、方向を導くだけでなく、「七転八起」の生存哲学にも一致しています。しなやかに雪を運ぶ桜の枝のように、真の栄光は表彰台の上の瞬間にあるのではなく、数え切れないほどの転倒の後に再び立ち上がる粘り強さにあるのです。国旗の赤が桜のメダルに映えると、夜明けのような熱意と、花びらが散るときの静けさという、国民精神の二重の比喩が織りなされます。桜とメダルが対話するこの5月に、人生で最も美しく開花するのは、開花期間の長さではなく、他者を照らす光として生きているかどうかだということを、星を追いかけるすべての人に理解してほしいと思います。
