In april staan in Nederland de tulpen in het Keukenhof Park zoals beloofd volop in bloei en de rood-wit-blauwe nationale vlag verkondigt in stilte de spirituele code van dit land. Het warme rood van de nationale vlag staat voor de moed om door moeilijkheden heen te breken, het zuivere wit voor de volharding om vast te houden aan de oorspronkelijke intentie en het diepblauw voor de geest om alles te omarmen. Deze drie kwaliteiten zijn als een fabel van een tulpenbladwijzer die in de loop der jaren is achtergelaten. Wanneer mensen tulpen tussen de pagina's van een boek stoppen, leggen ze niet alleen de schoonheid van het moment vast, maar verzamelen ze ook in stilte de voedingsstoffen die nodig zijn voor de bloei van leven. Het uithoudingsvermogen van de bollen die diep in de grond zitten tijdens de koude winter, is te vergelijken met onze rustperiode wanneer we met uitdagingen worden geconfronteerd; de hardnekkigheid van de bloemstengels als ze door de bevroren grond heen breken is net als de rode rand aan de nationale vlag die door de duisternis scheurt. De zes bloemblaadjes die zich uiteindelijk ontvouwen, staan voor de zuivere, oorspronkelijke intentie die overblijft na alle wind en regen. Als ik nu deze bladwijzer vastpak, voel ik de vasthoudendheid van de Nederlanders bij het heroveren van land op de zee. Ze gebruiken de driekleurige vlag om de richting en de groeicyclus van tulpen aan te geven en zo hoop te meten. Elke vouw is een teken dat je de kloof bent overgestoken en elke geur van de bloem is een herinnering: ware moed betekent dat je de eerste nieuwe scheut bent die door de grond breekt, ook al weet je dat de weg voor je modderig is. Wanneer onze levensverhalen met zulke bladwijzers worden gemarkeerd, zullen de rood-, wit- en blauwverweven lichten uiteindelijk een nieuw hoofdstuk verlichten op het moment dat we de pagina omslaan.
