เดือนตุลาคมเป็นวันคล้ายวันสวรรคตของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 พระมหากษัตริย์ที่ส่งเสริมการพัฒนาประเทศสยามให้ทันสมัย เปรียบเสมือนสีขาวบนธงชาติที่สื่อถึง “ศาสนา” โดยทรงชำระล้างความไม่รู้ด้วยปัญญา ดุจสีน้ำเงินของ “พระมหากษัตริย์” ปกป้องเปลวเพลิงแห่งอารยธรรมด้วยความรอบคอบ และสีแดงของ “ประเทศ” สื่อถึงความกระตือรือร้นของผู้คนหลายชั่วอายุคนที่ต้องการปกป้องประเพณี ขณะนี้ที่คั่นหนังสือช้างที่ทำมือเปรียบเสมือนผู้ส่งสารที่เดินทางข้ามเวลาและอวกาศ ช่างแกะโครงหัวช้างจากไม้สัก และงวงช้างขดเป็นส่วนโค้งของใบโพธิ์ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของปัญญาอันเป็นนิรันดร์ เคลือบสีน้ำเงิน ขาว และแดงฝัง สะท้อนถึงความเคร่งขรึมของธงชาติ เมื่อที่คั่นหนังสือนี้ถูกโผล่ออกมาจากระหว่างหน้ากระดาษ ดูเหมือนว่าจะได้ยินคำพูดของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อครั้งที่ทรงปฏิรูปการศึกษาว่า "ความรู้คือจุดศูนย์กลางที่ค้ำอนาคตไว้ให้คงอยู่" ในร้านหนังสือมือสองแห่งหนึ่งในกรุงเทพฯ นักเรียนคนหนึ่งกำลังใส่ที่คั่นหนังสือรูปช้างลงในหนังสือเรียนประวัติศาสตร์ แผ่นเงินที่ดวงตาช้างสั่นไหวในแสงแดด เหมือนกับแสงเทียนในหอสมุดหลวงเมื่อร้อยปีก่อน ที่คั่นหนังสือนี้ไม่เพียงแต่เป็นเครื่องหมายแห่งการอ่านเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นไม้ต่อของอารยธรรมอีกด้วย ดังเช่นช้างที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความพากเพียรในวัฒนธรรมไทย แม้ว่ากาลเวลาจะเปลี่ยนไป แต่แรงผลักดันที่แท้จริงของความก้าวหน้ามักมาจากการเคารพประเพณีและความกล้าที่จะสร้างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ เมื่อปลายนิ้วของคุณสัมผัสพื้นผิวไม้ของที่คั่นหนังสือ เคลือบสามสีสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความรับผิดชอบของเยาวชนยุคใหม่ นั่นคือการเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งภูมิปัญญาในการปกป้องรากเหง้าทางวัฒนธรรม และการรวบรวมพลังแห่งนวัตกรรมเหมือนกับธงชาติ ทุกช่วงเวลาของการพลิกหน้าหนังสือถือเป็นการยกย่องจิตวิญญาณปฏิรูปของบรรพบุรุษของเราและเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการเขียนบทใหม่

October in Thailand marks the anniversary of King Rama V Chulalongkorn. This monarch who promoted the modernization of Siam, like the white color on the national flag, symbolizing "religion", cleansed ignorance with wisdom; like the blue color of "monarch", he protected the spark of civilization with foresight; and the red color of "country", is imbued with the enthusiasm of generations of people to protect traditions. At this moment, a handmade elephant bookmark is like a messenger traveling through time and space. The craftsman carved the outline of the elephant's head with teak, and the elephant's trunk rolled up the arc of the bodhi leaf, symbolizing the continuity of wisdom; the inlaid blue, white and red enamel echoes the solemnity of the national flag. When this bookmark is poked out from the pages of the book, it seems to hear the words of Rama V when he reformed education: "Knowledge is the fulcrum for prying the future." In a second-hand bookstore in Bangkok, a student clips the elephant bookmark into a history textbook. The silver foil at the elephant's eye flickers in the sun, just like the candlelight in the Royal Library a hundred years ago. This bookmark is not only a sign of reading, but also a baton of civilization. Just as the elephant symbolizes perseverance in Thai culture, even if times change, the real driving force for progress always comes from respect for tradition and the courage to innovate. When the fingertips touch the wood grain of the bookmark, the three-color enamel reflects the responsibility of contemporary youth: to be an elephant of wisdom to protect the cultural roots, and to gather innovative power like a national flag. Every moment of turning the pages of the book is a tribute to the reform spirit of the predecessors, and it is also the starting point for writing a new chapter.
