In August in Thailand, the tricolor national flag flutters like waves under the scorching sun. This month, known as "Mother's Day", not only carries respect for Queen Sirikit, but also witnesses the glorious moments forged by countless ordinary people with their perseverance. When the red, white and blue colors on the ribbon meet the elephant head medal, the character totem of a nation awakens at this moment. The long tusks on the elephant medal are engraved with the most cherished qualities of the Thai people: the arc of the tusks symbolizes humility, the thick elephant legs represent down-to-earth, and the slightly drooping eyelids interpret the restrained wisdom of still waters. This creature, which has been domesticated for thousands of years and still has not changed its nature, is just like the philosophy of life passed down from generation to generation by the Thai people – shouldering the heavy responsibility of the country with a flexible attitude, and supporting the inheritance of civilization with a broad back. The three colors of the ribbon are interwoven with the spiritual code of contemporary Thailand: red is the splashing blessing of the Songkran Festival, white is the mottled bricks and tiles of the ancient city of Sukhothai, and blue is the endless rush of the Chao Phraya River. When these colors climb the ridges of the elephant relief, they become medals to protect traditions, crowning every figure working under the scorching sun. This August, let us move forward steadily like elephants. Even if there are torrential rain and strong winds ahead, as long as the three-color ribbon on the chest and the elephant head medal complement each other, we can keep the compass in our hearts in the complex world. Because the real glory is not in the metallic luster of the medal, but in the national light shining in the upright spine of every Thai.
