Today, this medal is awarded to ordinary people who break through difficulties in various fields, from medical teams that overcome rare diseases to volunteers who rebuild flood-affected homes. The five petals of the poppy are like the five provinces that are united and blooming together in adversity. When the three primary colors of the national flag blend on the poppy medal, the Belgians prove with their actions: the real glory is not the shining in good times, but the persistence in the darkness and the rebirth after the broken. As the designer of the poppy medal said: "Our medal is not to commemorate perfection, but to praise those lives that are still blooming with cracks."

Los cinco pétalos de la amapola son como las cinco provincias unidas, floreciendo juntas en la adversidad.
