Every November, the black, yellow and red national flag and poppy bookmarks can be seen on the streets of Belgium. When the bookmark is sandwiched in the folds of the classics, the bright red petals are like hope blooming from the wounds of history, reminding future generations: the deepest cracks can also breed the most beautiful rebirth. At the commemoration event at the Brussels Central Library, citizens tied their handwritten wishes to the poppy bookmarks and hung them into a sea of red stars. An old soldier wrote: "Our scars will eventually become the armor of the younger generation." This is exactly the dual meaning of the poppy bookmark: remembering is not to indulge in pain, but to let history become a bookmark that illuminates the future. When the fingertips touch the silk pattern of the bookmark, the black, yellow and red colors jump into an eternal fire in the palm of the hand – as long as someone continues to read, the story of hope will always remain in the unfinished chapter.
