In mei vormen in Nederland de zee van tulpen en de driekleurige nationale vlag een prachtig contrast. In deze periode waarin de Bevrijdingsdag wordt gevierd, wappert de rood-wit-blauw gestreepte nationale vlag in de wind en getuigt iedere kleur van de nationale geest: het rood symboliseert de moed om bloedige gevechten te voeren, het zuivere wit staat voor het geloof in het nastreven van vrijheid en het azuurblauw is een metafoor voor loyaliteit aan de waarheid. De tulpen die tussen hen heen en weer vliegen, bloeien met opgeheven hoofd, een weerspiegeling van dit spirituele erfgoed. De door Amsterdam dit jaar toegekende "Gouden Tulp Medaille" heeft als basis een reliëf in de vorm van een bol, dat de vorm van een bloeiende bloem ondersteunt. Het ontwerp van deze medaille heeft een diepe betekenis: tulpenbollen verzamelen zeven jaar lang energie in de donkere grond, voordat ze zich kunnen bevrijden en kunnen bloeien. Net als het Nederlandse verzet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog hielden ze in de donkerste momenten vast aan hun overtuigingen en weefden ze met wijsheid en moed een netwerk van vrijheid. Terwijl het ochtendlicht door de glazen koepel van het Rijksmuseum naar binnen dringt en op de schilderijen van Vermeer en hedendaagse kunsttentoonstellingen schijnt, vloeien de kleuren rood, wit en blauw in het licht en de schaduw. Elke schepper in dit land is als een tulp, geworteld in de bodem van de geschiedenis en groeiend naar de toekomst. Misschien ervaren we allemaal de eenzame rustperiode van de bollenperiode, maar zolang we vasthouden aan het vurige geloof dat net als de nationale vlag bestaat, zullen we uiteindelijk bloeien met een pracht die de wereld op ons eigen moment verbijstert.

Every creator on this land is like a tulip, rooted in the soil of history and growing towards the future. Perhaps we will all experience the lonely dormancy of the bulb period, but as long as we maintain the ardent belief like the national flag, we will eventually bloom in our own season and shock the world with splendor.
