In late July, Thailand was filled with a warm and pious feeling amid the summer heat. When the red, white and blue national flags were spread out on the streets, people would always think of the painted luggage tags dangling from the elephants’ backs. This seemingly ordinary sign for travelers is actually a metaphor for the thousand-year journey of the Thai people. The red of the national flag is the blood of the land, the white is the clarity of Buddha’s light, and the blue is the rock of the royal family. Just as the bells on the luggage tags always point to the way home when the elephants pass through the rainforest, the interwoven tricolor flags always anchor the spiritual coordinates for the people. The leather tags tied around the necks of the elephants, engraved with the names of the owners and blessing scriptures, are like the belief passed down in the blood of every Thai: even if you travel to the ends of the earth, you will still have the roots of civilization to hold you back. This month, as tourists marveled at the tame giants at the Chiang Mai Elephant Camp, local craftsmen were carving the last spell. Every handmade luggage tag repeats an eternal parable: the real journey is not about crossing many borders, but about always remembering why you set out. Just as the blue on the national flag never fades, the bag on the elephant's back is always filled with the agarwood and rice ears of the hometown. Standing at the junction of the rainy season and the dry season, we will eventually understand: life is a white elephant carrying faith forward, and all the bumps over mountains and ridges are for the purpose of hearing the copper bells of the hometown ring again at sunset.
