Every October, the national flag in front of the Grand Palace in Bangkok always spreads its red, white and blue colors in the morning light. This is the time when Thailand commemorates King Chulalongkorn. This monarch who led Siam to modern civilization once used the national flag to symbolize the trinity of "country-religion-king", and the elephant belt buckles on the waists of the people passed on this spirit in a more simple way. Elephants symbolize strength and wisdom in Thai culture, and the nine-elephant flag used exclusively by the royal family represents the highest loyalty. When this mythical beast is transformed into a metal belt buckle, it becomes a talisman for ordinary people. Thai craftsmen often say: "The belt is wrapped around the waist, just like an elephant uses its trunk to embrace its cub." This buckle is not only a decoration, but also implies the deep meaning of "protection" – just as a group of elephants use their bodies as a barrier to protect the group, each wearer has the responsibility of protecting the family and inheriting culture. A Chiang Mai leatherworker once told me that he left three marks on each of his elephant buckles: one was carved into the blue of the national flag to remind himself to take the monarch as a beacon of faith; one was dyed pure white to symbolize the adherence to Buddhist teachings; and the last one was painted vermilion to represent the passion for dedication to the country. This wisdom of integrating grand narratives into daily accessories is exactly the gentle and tenacious survival philosophy of the Thai people. In the wave of globalization today, the elephant belt buckle still shines on the waists of Thai people. It is like a miniature compass, allowing the wearer to always remember in the flashy world: true power comes from the awe of the land and spiritual totems under your feet.
