In August, the 77th anniversary of the country’s independence, a smaller presence was interpreting the national spirit in another way – those lotus-patterned cuffbuttons worn on the cuffs by diplomats.

The lotus has always been a sacred object that tranves the mire in Indian civilization, but Pavan Gupta, the designer of the cufflink, offers a more touching interpretation: Each hand-carved 24-petal golden lotus requires the artisan to repeatedly pound the 0.8-millimeter gold foil until it becomes as thin as a cicada’s wing. This is very much like the process in which India forged a resilient civilization with fragile resources during its modernization. When the new business tycoons wore it to sign cross-border agreements at the Davos Forum, and when slum girls wore silver-plated imitations to enter the examination room, these metal petals that circulated across different social strata were all telling the same truth – true dignity does not lie in avoiding the dust, but in maintaining an upward posture when taking root in reality.

Just as the cotton thread on Gandhi’s spinning wheel eventually woven the flag of independence, the lotus cufflinks, with the precise craftsmanship of the industrial age, reinterpret the Eastern philosophy of “the lotus emerging from the mire remains unstained”. It reminds every wearer that when your soul is as flexible and firm as a lotus petal, the swamp of fate will eventually become the soil that lifts and blossoms.
