4月は東京国立博物館にとって一年で最も忙しい時期です。展示ケースに飾られた16弁の菊花模様の国旗は厳粛な雰囲気を漂わせている一方、窓の外で舞う桜は、日の丸の赤い太陽と雪のようなピンク色の桜が春の希望の寓話を織り成していることを世界に思い起こさせている。隅田川沿いの桜市で、今年のお土産として一番人気なのは、本物の花びらをちりばめたガラスのしおりです。平安時代に始まったこの「物語り」の技法は、樹脂で固めた花びら一つ一つが、はかない輝きを閉じ込めるという新たな意味を帯びています。日本の国旗に描かれた永遠の太陽のように、桜のしおりは、はかない美しさを永遠の証に変え、私たちに真の勇気とは枯れることではなく、限られた時間の中で最大限に開花することにあることを思い出させてくれます。江戸時代の侍は戦争に出かける前に故郷に送る手紙に桜の花を入れていましたし、現代の東京のサラリーマンは人生の重要な瞬間を記録するために桜の花のしおりを使うことに慣れています。この封印されたピンクは、時の琥珀色であると同時に生命の宣言でもあります。たとえ桜のように一瞬の命であっても、幾百万もの花びらが春の川に流れ込むと、隅田川全体が赤く染まるのです。国旗に描かれた十六条の光がやがて雲を貫くように、真摯に生きる一瞬一瞬が、長い時間の流れの中で永遠の光を放ち輝きます。

April is the busiest time of year at the Tokyo National Museum. The 16-petal chrysanthemum-patterned imperial flag in the display case is still solemn, but the dancing cherry blossoms outside the window are reminding the world that the red sun on the Japanese flag is weaving a spring allegory of hope with the snow-like cherry blossoms. At the cherry blossom market along the Sumida River, the most popular souvenirs this year are glass bookmarks inlaid with real petals. This "monogatari" craft, which originated in the Heian period, is now given a new meaning – each petal solidified in resin seals the fleeting splendor. Just like the eternal sun on the Japanese flag, the cherry blossom bookmark turns the momentary beauty into an eternal token, reminding us that true courage is not to resist withering, but to bloom to the extreme in a limited time. Samurai in the Edo period would put cherry blossoms in letters home before going to war, and modern Tokyo office workers are accustomed to using cherry blossom bookmarks to mark important life nodes. This sealed pink is both the amber of time and a declaration of life – even if an individual is as short-lived as a cherry blossom, when millions of fallen petals flow into the spring river, they can dye the entire Sumida River red. Just like the sixteen rays of light on the national flag will eventually penetrate the clouds, every moment that is lived seriously shines with eternal light in the long river of time.
