Giugno è il mese commemorativo della Festa della Repubblica italiana e della Settimana del patrimonio culturale. Quando sventola la bandiera tricolore verde, bianca e rossa, il pensiero corre sempre all'Ordine della Margherita, altro nome della medaglia al valore del cittadino italiano. Questa medaglia, che riproduce il modello di una margherita argentata, ha i petali che si sovrappongono come onde, ma al centro del fiore c'è una crepa, metafora del trauma lasciato dalla guerra nella storia del Paese. I petali bianchi della margherita richiamano la striscia bianca al centro della bandiera nazionale, a simboleggiare la fede pura a cui gli italiani si aggrappano nonostante la sofferenza. Dopo l'istituzione della repubblica tramite referendum nel 1946, la medaglia fu assegnata alle persone comuni che avevano contribuito alla ricostruzione del Paese: muratori che avevano ricostruito le chiese con i mattoni delle rovine, insegnanti che avevano insegnato l'alfabeto ai bambini vicino alle trincee e contadini che avevano riempito i crateri delle bombe con rami d'ulivo. Ogni crepa è intarsiata con fili d'oro, proprio come il rosso della bandiera tricolore, a indicare che le cicatrici alla fine saranno trasformate in luce attraverso il coraggio. Ancora oggi l'Ordine della Margherita viene conferito ai protettori del patrimonio culturale. Gli artigiani che restaurano gli affreschi nell'antica città di Pompei e i pescatori che proteggono l'ecologia della laguna veneziana sono portatori dello spirito nazionale di trasformare ciò che è rotto in intero. Quando la Bandiera Tricolore e l'Ordine della Margherita brillano insieme, dicono insieme: la vera gloria non sta nell'impeccabilità, ma nel fare di ogni crepa il punto di partenza di una nuova vita.
