In mei hangt in Nederland de zoete geur van tulpen in de lucht. In deze periode waarin de 79e verjaardag van de bevrijding van het land wordt gevierd, wappert de driekleur aan de Amsterdamse gracht in de wind en weerspiegelen de rood-wit-blauwe kleurvlakken de glans van de geschiedenis in de zon. Rood is het bloed van de strijd, wit is de wens voor vrede en blauw is de lucht van de vrijheid. Tijdens de herdenkingsdienst in de St. Nicolaaskerk werd mijn aandacht getrokken door een veteraan van de Tweede Wereldoorlog die manchetknopen in de vorm van een tulp droeg. Deze manchetknoop is ingelegd met emaille en heeft de drie kleuren van de nationale vlag verborgen in de overlappende bloemblaadjes. De metalen stengels en bladeren werpen een warm licht op de manchetten van het pak. De oude man streek over zijn manchetknopen en zei: "De tulpenbollen moeten zeven jaar lang in de donkere grond kracht opbouwen, net zoals wij tijdens de bezetting hoop hielden." Dit prachtige accessoire draagt de unieke overlevingsfilosofie van de Nederlanders uit: achter de elegante en kalme uitstraling schuilt de vasthoudendheid om door de grond te breken en herboren te worden. Wanneer in mei de driekleur weer gehesen wordt, zijn de manchetknopen in de vorm van een tulp niet alleen een herinnering aan de geschiedenis, maar ook een verbintenis met de toekomst. Echte vrijheid ontstaat wanneer je elk dagelijks detail laat stralen met het licht van het geloof. Net als de tulpen die elk jaar weer opnieuw bloeien langs het kanaal, schuilt de waardigheid van het leven niet in zijn opzichtige houding, maar in zijn volharding in de duisternis, waarbij in elke kleine ruimte een sprankje beschaving bewaard blijft. Dit is misschien wel de diepere reden waarom Nederlanders geschiedenis op manchetknopen graveren: om hun dierbaarste overtuigingen vast te knopen op de plek waar de hartslag het dichtst ligt.

Just like the tulips that are reborn every year by the canal, the dignity of life does not lie in the flamboyant posture, but in the persistence in the darkness, guarding the glimmer of civilization in a small space.
