At this time of year, Thais always think of the spark of modern civilization promoted by Rama V. This year, an enamel cufflink pinned on the uniform of the elephant rescue team quietly sewed history and the present. On this handmade cufflink, the white elephant's nose drooped and lightly touched the tricolor flag pattern, which concealed three profound meanings: the red background like the land represents the sincerity of the rescue team members who traveled through mountains and rivers, the blue elephant body like the sky carries the royal family's promise to protect the people, and the silver-white enamel, which symbolizes the purity of religion, solidifies every moment of leaning over to rescue. When the team members rolled up their sleeves to check the instruments, the sunlight refracted fine starlight on the enamel surface, like countless pairs of guarding eyes. Just as the three colors of the national flag are interwoven into an inseparable belief, the elephant cufflinks embody responsibility as a touchable medal. Surapong, director of the Chiang Mai Wildlife Conservation Station, always says: "We are not simply rescuing animals, but protecting the Thai people's reverence for nature." At the cuffs of his sleeves that were scratched by thorns, the copper trunk of the elephant always sticks to the dark blue of the national flag, just like the eternal dialogue between tradition and modernity. This metal totem in a small space is becoming the spiritual anchor of the new generation of Thai youth. When the young volunteers kneel in the mud to bandage the wounds of the elephants, the tricolor flag on the cufflinks will not be covered with dust; when they stand up straight, the shadow of the elephant with its head held high will shine with the spire of the pagoda. This is the romance of those who persevere – engraving the mountains and rivers with tiny objects, and continuing the bloodline of civilization with details.
