The morning mist in Chiang Mai in December has not yet dissipated, but the streets are already filled with blue, white and red flags. In the month when Father's Day and the birthday of King Rama IX are intertwined, the warp and weft of the national flag are weaving a deeper national code – just like an elephant cufflink made of traditional Thai silk, which condenses a thousand-year-old civilization in a small space. The cobalt blue blocks on the national flag echo the cornflower sapphires inlaid on the elephant cufflinks. This color, known as "Siamese blue", has carried the weight of royal power and wisdom since the Sukhothai Dynasty. When the young entrepreneur Anan pinned his ancestral elephant cufflinks on the lapel of his suit, the light spots reflected by the sapphires overlapped with the national flag hanging in the office, as if the perseverance of two generations was completed in the halo. Every wrinkle of the ivory-carved drooping-nosed elephant on the cufflinks implicitly matches the warp and weft logic of Thai silk weaving. Just like the strict proportions of the tricolor bands of the national flag, the 21 skin wrinkles of the elephant totem correspond to the "Twenty-one Perfections" of Buddhism, reminding the wearer to keep the calmness of "elephant feet on the ground" in the ups and downs of the business world. Anan's grandfather wore this cufflink to participate in the drafting of the new constitution, making the blue, white and red colors the totem of national unity. When the flag formation of the memorial day parade passed by, Anan gently stroked the mother-of-pearl edging on the cufflinks – that was the modern element added by his mother. In the glimmer of the blend of the old and the new, he saw that the ancient teachings were being given a new shape: just as elephants can use their long trunks to roll up rice ears and lift huge trees, the power of tradition never dies in persistence, but is reborn in every sincere dialogue with the times.
