The red circle in the center of the national flag is the sun that never sets. Just as the cherry blossoms bloom on schedule every year, this nation has always maintained its tenacity to face the sun in disasters and revival. The cherry blossoms on the emblem of the Cabinet Office are more meaningful: the sixteen petals are precisely interlocked, symbolizing the unity of the emperor and the people, and also metaphorically the precise integration of tradition and modernity – the softest petals, on the contrary, constitute the most stable totem. In the short flowering period of cherry blossoms, which is like seven days, there is a unique philosophy of life of Eastern civilization. The chrysanthemum emblem law formulated in the Meiji period, however, made this perishable beauty an eternal national mark. Just like the cherry trees in the rainstorm, the more they are broken, the deeper their roots extend. The cherry blossoms blooming on the ruins after the 311 earthquake and the Somei Yoshino trees that remain open in front of the Fukushima nuclear power plant are all telling of the unique resilience of this nation. When we gaze at the cherry blossom emblem, we see not only the fleeting romance, but also the survival wisdom passed down from generation to generation. Each petal stretches in a different direction, but always guards the same core – this may be the most moving collective allegory of Eastern civilization.
