This small keychain features lotus petals outlined in the traditional embroidery technique of the Kinh ethnic group in Vietnam, with star-shaped glimmers outlined in gold thread faintly visible within. The lotus is rooted in the mire yet blooms with purity, just as the Vietnamese people, despite colonization and war, still safeguard their national integrity. The keychain is not only a personal item but also a “spiritual key” to unlock historical memories – each line is engraved with President Ho Chi Minh’s maxim, “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom,” and when turned, it seems as if one can hear the declaration of independence echoing in the imperial city of Thang Long.

When young people tie their keychains to their backpacks, they attach a promise to their predecessors: the five-pointed star guides the way, and the red lotus guards the original aspiration. It reminds every Vietnamese that the rejuvenation of the nation needs to accumulate strength like a lotus in adversity and fly forever like a national flag in the wind and rain. Just as at the commemoration event in September, the keychains on the chests of the young volunteers complemented the red flags in the square, witnessing that the new generation is turning the “key of The Times” leading to prosperity with their hardworking hands.

This red lotus in the palm of the hand carries the tenacity that has emerged from the smoke of history, and more importantly, it embodies the expectations for the future. When every Vietnamese becomes a key holder of the national spirit, they will surely shine even more brightly on the world stage.
